A coupe of weeks ago I made a Cherry-Berry juice that I used in my lemonade and then ultimately in a shandy (you can find all the recipes here). Well, I went ahead an threw that in with some soda water from our Soda Stream. Then I went really crazy and threw some half and half in to make an Italian soda.
In a burst of soda-flavor-inspiration (and needing to use up some fruits before vacation), I decided to mix up some more homemade drink syrups to freeze. The two featured fruits…lemon and blueberry.
The featured drink..a little of each to make a wonderful Blueberry Lemon Italian Soda. Fill a glass with ice, pour in a little blueberry syrup, a little lemon syrup, soda water on top of that and a bit of half and half. It almost like a blueberry-lemon muffin.
And If you have never made your own drink syrup, let me tell you how quick and easy it is: clean fruit (pitted if needed), sugar, water, boil.
about 4 cups clean blueberries
2 cups sugar
2 cups water.
about 1 cup fresh squeezed lemon juice (about 8 lemons)
zest of one lemon
2 cups sugar
2 cups water
For each type of syrup, combine your fruit, water and sugar in a sauce pan (mash up the blueberries). Bring to a simmer and continue to cook until the sugar is dissolved. Strain through a fine mesh strainer into a large bowl to cool.
Once cooled, I put mine into freezer safe mason jars, labeled them, and stuck them in our freezer.
I am already thinking of what other flavors and combinations I can do. Maybe some for coffee? Or for soy milk for the kids? Or maybe have a Soda Bar at a party where guest can combine their own flavors?
Now, we’re talking!
