The kids and I were visiting my family in Central New York a couple of weeks ago, having fun, visiting, saying some goodbyes, and enjoying some local fall goodness. We always have so much fun when we go, and we always want to do so much while we visit that there is never a dull moment. One of the highlights of that visit was our trip to the Saranac Brewery (once the West End Brewing Company, now, officially the F.X. Matt Brewing Company, which brews the local, nostalgic, questionably good beer, Utica Club).
I have been to plenty of Saranac events before, the biggest being the post-party of the Boilermaker 15k Road Race. It is in the parking lot of the brewery and has the reputation of being the largest post-race party in the nation. Such fun! But never a brewery tour. What kind of Central New Yorker am I?
The brewery is pretty small scale but it was so cool to see. The building itself had so many historical features and artifacts, it was really impressive to walk through it.
Like P.T. Barnum’s custom made desk…
And this antique grandfather clock…
Moira and Ronan were totally fascinated by the bottling process. The bottles have no stickers, and then all of a sudden, they have stickers!
We all know I have a slight obsession with chandeliers…
At the end we got to try out some brews in the tavern. Moira and Ronan got Saranac Root Beer and Orange Cream Soda. Ok, I snuck a few sips of their drinks as well. I think that stuff is the best you will ever find. Try it with ice cream…for real!
We ate pretzels, chatted, and watched vintage Utica Club commercials, staring Schultz and Dooley all the while. I guess they were a big hit back then…beer steins smoking cigarettes. Could you imagine that on TV now?
I am so excited that we finally made it. I can’t wait to bring Mr. CB to the Saranac Brewery on one of our future visits to CNY!
Do you have a landmark in your area that you haven’t been to yet or are dying to get to?
